How to enable / set up remote desktop on Windows 8

If you don’t know what is Remote Desktop ( also known as RDP ), it is a feature incorporated since Windows XP that allows you to control another computer remotely as if you were sitting there.
Although this feature is not so popular among the average Windows users, it might come in handy if you want to access your office computer from home, or if you want to view your friend’s computer for whatever the reasons.

In order to access the Windows 8 machine remotely, you need to enable it first. Just in case you still haven’t tried your hands on Microsoft’s latest OS yet, consider reading my previous article on how to install Windows 8 on VMware.

1.From the metro interface in Windows 8, use the keyboard shortcut Windows + R to bring the Run command screen. Type in ‘SystemPropertiesRemote.exe‘ and press OK.

2.This will bring up the System Properties screen. Select “Allow remote connections to this computer” and Press ‘Ok‘.

3.You now need to get the IP address of the Windows 8 machine, from the Run screen type ‘cmd‘ and then type ‘ipconfig‘ in the command screen, and you should get the IP address of this computer.

4.To access the Windows 8 computer remotely, type in ‘mstsc‘ in the Run screen ( similar to step 1) from your home/main computer and type in the IP Address that you got from the Windows 8 PC.
